Chavez warns that Honduras’ crisis could unleash a civil war

Jul 17. ABN.- The President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez Frias, warned that the crisis generated in Honduras, because of the coup d’état carried out against the President Jose Manuel Zelaya, could unleash a civil war due to the negative of the putschists of handing over the power.

During statements offered from La Paz, Bolivia’s capital city, the Venezuelan President said that the putschists’ negative of leaving the power, led by Roberto Micheletti and the General Romeo Vasquez Velasquez, is just provoking the Honduran people that demand the return of Zelaya.

“The military officers that want to unleash a civil war in Honduras will not be able to control the people. What do they want’ People armed with rifles and machine-guns’ If that would happen, and we hope not, people would sweep them,” he said.

In this sense, he made a call to the soldiers and officers of the Honduran Armed Forces to lay down their support to the putschist regime, to reestablish the constitutional order of the Central American nation and to follow the orders of the Commander-in-Chief, Manuel Zelaya.

“The oligarchy is using you. You look like a foreign army that invaded Honduras. The difference is that your are Hondurans, it is a sad role the one you are playing. That’s why I am calling you to obey the oath, the Constitution and your Commander-in-Chief, who is only the President Manuel Zelaya,” he stressed.

Chavez was asked about a possible Zelaya’s return to Honduras. Chavez said that Zelaya has expressed his willingness to return to Honduran territory, but that he has no information if such return plan is already in progress.

“I do not know if right now, at this right moment, Zelaya is already in Honduran territory. I do not know if Zelaya will appear publicly in a city of Honduras or if he is going to work underground. What I know is that Zelaya has proved to be brave. He has proved to be a honorable heir of Morazan. He will go to Honduras and he told me: Chavez, I do not know if we are going to talk again, because I do not know if I will be killed but I want you to know that I am with you,” Chavez said.

The Venezuelan President emphasized that the fight held by Honduras’ people and its President is the greater prove that the era of the coups in Latin America has already passed. Therefore, he urged continental bourgeoisie to leave aside their gorilla’s ideas.

“Putschists must understand that the era of the gorillas have gone down in history. They have mistaken time and space, because what rules now Latin America is the strength of the people and democracy,” he underscored.
